Minnesota Farmers' Market Association

Over 60 emerging farmers gathered at Cragun's Resort, in Brainerd, March 19-21, to study farm finances, farm profitability analysis, retail and wholesale sales channels, and compiling Schedule Fs. Minnesota Department of Agriculture Emerging Farmers Office Director Lillian Otieno joined the group for the closing ceremonies and presented each farmer with their certificate. Funded primarily by a grant from the MDA Emerging Farmers Office, each farmer received a $500 scholarship upon completion of the course to kickstart their 2024 farm plans. Support for this also came from the Latino Economic Development Center, University of Minnesota Extension, Minnesota Farmers Union, Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, and the Minnesota Farmers' Market Association.

Gettin' Ready for the Season!

Minnesota Farmers' Market

Food Hubs

bridging the gap between

producers and consumers

Watch the video here.

So what's a "farmers' market food hub" (FMFH) and why does a community need it?

FMFHs function much like a grocery store, but a grocery store that carries 100% products from its area food farmers and food makers - thus driving food security and economic development in their communities. FMFHs are licensed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture as either retail food handlers or wholesale food handlers, depending on the majority of their sales to either retail consumers or wholesale customers.

FMFHs first began in Minnesota in 2016. Fifteen farmers' markets have tried the model, with five finding ongoing success and two more starting their business. You can find MN's farmers' market food hubs here.
