Minnesota Farmers' Market Association

Grow Your Green Farm Profitability (GYG-FP) is an initiative of MFMA to help more farmers achieve farm profitability, so they can continue to help grow more farmers' markets, and feed their communities.

The inaugural GYG-FP was held in March 2024 at Cragun's Resort. Close to 80 direct marketing farmers participated, with several of them graduating and becoming the Farmer Trainers in GYG-FP Cohort 2.

GYG-FP Cohort 2 uses the train-the-trainer model, where 20 direct marketing farmers attended a 2-day retreat at The Bee Center at UMN's Farm at the Arb to learn the material and apply it to their own farms. These 20 Farmer Trainers are now each training 5 more farmers in their communities, helping them record and categorize farm income and expense every month for 13 months. At year end, these 120 farmers will work with the Core Team to do enterprise analysis, whole farm profitability, prepare for tax filing, etc.

The Core Team consists of Heidi Eger, Canton; Erik Heimark, Aitkin; Delma Kaiga, Northfield; Ryan Pesch, Pelican Rapids, and Kathy Zeman, Nerstrand.

To optimize the impact of the GYG-FP program, the workbook and monthly coaching are free for anyone to use. The workbook is free to download in the Resource Room; use it to help you create your own farm financial records. It's designed to train financial principles, with multiple activities included (with the answers!) to reinforce the principles. Also in the Resource Room are templates for other financial tools like the Farm Ledger, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow.

When you have questions or need more help, feel free to register for our free Open Office Hours, offered twice every month in the mornings and evenings, April 2025 through April 2026. Click the Open Office Hours icon just below for exact dates and times and to get the zoom link.
