Minnesota Farmers' Market Association

The Wifery Livestock Skills Consortium is designed as a curriculum-based skills training series for livestock farmers. The series teaches farmers the critical knowledge and skills needed to profitably raise livestock. It allows farmers to perfect the skills required to offer a high level of care to their animals.

Each Wifery session includes the training material, plus a kit with the supplies / tools needed to perfect each task. Solutions include certified organic to pharmaceuticals. Sessions are limited to 20 participants to ensure ample time to learn and practice. Livestock, horse, rabbit, and poultry are included in the curriculum.

To join The Wifery cohort, please email wiferylivestockskills@gmail.com.

The current Wifery core workshops available are:

      1. Basic Livestock Care: topics covered include hoof trimming, wound treatments, suturing, splinting legs, giving shots (IM, SQ, IV, IP), drawing blood samples, giving IVs, etc. Kit includes syringes, needles, thermometer, gauzes, stethoscope, disinfectants, etc.
      2. Parasite ID and Management: participants bring manure samples from their animals and learn how to do on-farm fecal floats to ID the parasites. Discussion includes how to prevent parasitic problems and best treatment options. Fecal Float kit includes everything required to perform 5 complete samples.
      3. Birthing & Babies: topics covered include identifying pregnancy problems and solutions, handling dystocia, tubing babies, ear tagging, ear notching, tattooing, disbudding / dehorning, castrating, etc. Kit includes taggers, notchers, pullers, banders, bands, J-Lube, OB gloves, etc.
      4. Management, Records, & Nutrition: many of the livestock care issues can be prevented or minimized by a high level of nutrition and management. This workshop is focused on learning principles and strategy discussions. Record keeping for production and financial analysis is included.

The Wifery Team

Faced with two area vet clinics that stopped serving large livestock operations, six women farmers collaborated on finding answers for their own operations. Resources were studied and discussed, skills were practiced and honed. It soon became apparent there was a widespread need for this advanced level of health care for livestock by farmers themselves - not only to provide better care for their animals but also to sustain profitability. The Wifery Livestock Skills Consortium was born in the summer of 2024 and continues to grow.

 Kathy Zeman

Kathy Zeman (she/her) grew up on a typical diversified livestock and crop farm in Steele County and enjoyed a very successful career in 4-H, FFA, and Junior Holstein. Coaching numerous state and national dairy and general livestock quiz bowl and judging teams, Kathy brings that animal science knowledge to The Wifery team. Her degree in ag business / farm business management / ag econ drives her to connect production to profitability. The skills The Wifery teaches farmers to do themselves helps them take better care of their livestock - and become more profitable.

Kathy purchased her first farm in 1998 and has owned Simple Harvest Farm Organics by Nerstrand since 2006. Simple Harvest is all highly erodible land, so it's in perennial pasture and grazes stacked livestock enterprises. Sheep, goats, pigs, broilers, and turkeys are sold direct to consumer; eggs are sold retail and wholesale. All inputs at Simple Harvest are certified organic. Simple Harvest is an MDA Ag Water Quality certified farm with three endorsements: organic, soil health, climate smart.

 Lindsey Zemanek

Lindsey Zemanek is the owner and operator of Burning Daylight Draft Farm in southern Minnesota. She and her husband farm primarily with draft animal power. They raise pastured lamb, poultry, and meat rabbits. Lindsey was always in love with animals. She grew up surrounded by ranchers in the southwest as an avid horsewoman. In order to further her education and career with animals, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science at New Mexico State University. Lindsey realized that while animals were important to her, so was serving other people. She completed a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. A move across the country to Minnesota allowed Lindsey to complete further education and then for her and her husband to purchase their first little farm. Due to her background in animal science, Lindsey has always been interested and able to care for her own livestock as much as possible. It is a passion for her to help other farmers learn as many skills as possible for caring for their animals.
